Skin Care at Every Age
There are an overwhelming number of products claiming to eliminate wrinkles and restore youthful beauty to your skin. It can be mind-boggling trying to determine which product is best for you.
Higher cost doesn’t always mean it’s better
Keep in mind that over-the-counter cosmetic products are designed to help improve the appearance of the skin. The exotic ingredients in the products are not designed to alter the chemical or structural component of your skin. Many of the products temporarily smooth the surface of the skin and evenly reflect the light to give the appearance of radiant skin. A recent Consumer Reports study of over-the-counter anti-wrinkle products determined that testers did not appreciate much difference in their skin with the tested products. In fact, more testers preferred the less expensive Oil of Olay product over the more expensive department store products like La Prairie. In other words, for temporary improvements in the appearance of your skin (as with make-up), more expensive does not necessarily equal more effective.
Causes and treatments for skin damage
There are several factors that contribute to how your skin ages: Genetics; damage from the cumulative environmental assault (such as sun exposure); and gravity leading to sagging skin. There are products that can help address the causes of aging skin. The most important component is sun protection. Ingredients such as retinoic acids and antioxidants have shown to reduce fine lines, increase collagen formation under the skin and reverse sun damage. Hydroquinone can prevent and reduce uneven pigmentation in skin.
