What Is Juvéderm?
JUVÉDERM is an FDA-approved injectable dermal filler designed to smooth away wrinkles around the nose and mouth. Juvéderm is composed of hyaluronic acid, a substance that is naturally present in the skin. The results of this non-surgical, cosmetic procedure will be evident immediately and can last up to one year.
How Does Juvéderm Work?
Juvéderm is composed mainly of hyaluronic acid, an innate substance in the skin that keeps skin hydrated and healthy. It is also extremely important for tissue repair. However, as we age the amount of hyaluronic acid is our skin begins to lessen. Sunlight and other factors can also diminish the amount of hyaluronic acid in the skin.
When Juvéderm is injected into the skin it replenishes some of that lost hyaluronic acid. Results are noticeable immediately as the hyaluronic acid gel hydrates the skin and helps to reduce wrinkles and creases on the face.
Is Juvéderm Right for Me?
Juvéderm has been approved for patients who are between the ages of 18 and 65. Those interested in this procedure should be in good physical and mental health. In addition, individuals should have realistic expectations about the outcome of this procedure.
Juvéderm is not right for individuals with severe allergies, skin infections, severe scarring or who are taking certain medications. Additionally, this procedure is not approved for patients who are nursing or pregnant. Interested patients should consult with a trusted dermatologist to discuss if Juvéderm is a good fit.
What are Some Benefits of Juvéderm?
Suitable for All Skin Types
Juvéderm can be used on all skin types. In fact, it is the first FDA-approved hyaluronic acid dermal filler that is safe for people of color. Studies have shown that Juvéderm does not increase the risk of hypertropic scarring or pigmentation.
Natural Results That Last
Juvéderm can produce long-lasting, natural looking results. Juvéderm is touted as a smooth gel filler that can last up to a year with no follow-up treatment. In addition, because of the smooth texture of the gel, Juvéderm is said to produce more natural looking results.
Little to No Discomfort
The treatment process is relatively pain-free. Juvéderm contains lidocaine, which is a type of anesthetic. Your dermatologist may also decide to anesthetize the treatment area to lessen any discomfort.
Juvéderm has two available formulas: JUVÉDERM® Ultra Plus X and JUVÉDERM® Ultra XC. This allows your dermatologist to tailor a treatment plan specifically for you.
Are There Any Side Effects?
Juvéderm is a minimally-invasive, safe procedure. However, it is not uncommon for patients to experience mild side effects such as pain, swelling and redness at the injection site. These side effects typically diminish within seven days of the treatment. If symptoms persist beyond seven days, patients should see a doctor.
How Long is the Recovery Process?
Juvéderm will not interrupt your daily activities. Following the procedure, patients are free to return to everyday life. However, patients are advised to avoid strenuous exercise and the consumption of alcoholic beverages for at least 24 hours following treatment. It is also advisable to limit sun exposure as this can worsen side effects such as swelling and redness.
